The Dangers of Sunscreen

Now that summer is here, many of you will begin to spend your time at the pool, lake, and beach. In addition to grabbing your bathing suits, towels, and sunglasses, many will also grab a bottle of suntan lotion or sunblock in hope of preventing sunburn and to protect yourself from skin cancer.

But what if applying that suntan lotion or sunblock is actually doing more harm than good?

Let me explain…

Did you know that the sunshine has tons of healthy benefits? The sun provides many wonderful health promoting benefits including:

Great source for Vit. D– After all, vitamin D plays a crucial role in your overall health and well-being. For example, this superb hormone is known to:

  • Support your cardiovascular health
  • Promote optimal cholesterol levels
  • Enhance your muscle strength
  • Help produce optimal blood pressure levels
  • Help maintain a healthy immune system
  • Support healthy kidney function
  • Promote healthy teeth
  • Help keep your bones strong and healthy

Aids in Detoxification: The sun does a great job of bringing toxins in your body to the surface of your skin so you can eliminate them via sweat. Double your detoxification by exercising in the sun!

Just makes you feel better: Sunshine helps with mood and depression. The warm sunshine on your body is a great way to improve you overall energy and vitality.

When you use sunscreens the UVB rays (good rays) that help produce Vitamin D, Aid in detoxification, and Improves mood are blocked and prevents the many benefits of the sun from occurring in your body. This is why it is very important that you spend at least 20-40 minutes per day without the use of any sunscreen.

In addition to blocking the benefits of the sun, the major problem with MOST sunscreen is that it contains tons of toxic chemicals that are harmful to your skin. Your skin is your largest organ and what you put on it will absorb into your blood stream including the harmful chemicals in your lotions.

If you are currently using a sunscreen with the following ingredients I suggest that you dump it in the trash now:

  • Para amino benzoic acid…
  • Octyl salicyclate…
  • Avobenzone…
  • Oxybenzone…
  • Cinoxate…
  • Padimate O…
  • Dioxybenzone…
  • Phenylbenzimidazole…
  • Homosalate…
  • Sulisobenzone…
  • Menthyl anthranilate…
  • Trolamine salicyclate…
  • Octocrylene…

Potentially harmful chemicals such as dioxybenzone and oxybenzone are some of the most powerful free radical generators known to man.

The good news is that there are some Natural sunscreens available that you can use when you find yourself being exposed to the sun for long periods of time.

One of my favorites contain Titanium Dioxide (6.0%) and Zinc Oxide (6.0%):

These two active ingredients are natural minerals. Minerals that actually come from clay and beach sand deposits. This means, they are not harsh, like the synthetically produced chemicals you’ll often find in popular brands.

And it may surprise you to find out that zinc oxide has been used all over the world for over 75 years as a safe sunscreen to help you prevent excessive sun exposure.

When it comes to sunscreen, however, I rarely use it.

But wait….What about skin cancer? The sunscreen industry has spent billions of dollars on marketing to convince you that the use of sunscreen is necessary to prevent skin cancer. But does applying it actually prevent cancer?

If sunscreen blocks UVB rays (good guys) from getting to your skin and producing Vit D, which is known to prevent cancer, how is it actually protecting you?

What about all of those countries that are around the Ecuator? Why do their populations, who don’t wear sunscreen, have much lower rates of skin cancer?

I believe that the true cause of skin cancer is from the overuse of toxins in the sunscreen itself, as well as, the amount of toxins that we are exposed to on a daily basis.

When you are in the sun, the toxins in your body will rise to the surface of your skin. If you are wearing sunscreen or other lotions that prevent the toxins from escaping it results in the toxins being trapped. It is these trapped toxins that do the damage to your skin and results in skin issues.

Now, am I saying that getting too much sun is good for you? Or that it is ok to burn and peel and have sun poisoning? Of coarse not! I do believe that you still have to be smart when it comes to your exposure in the sun. If you find that you are starting to burn or are going to be in the sun all day, make sure you bring some light clothes to cover up with and a hat or use some safe sunscreen.

Unfortunately, getting too much sun exposure can be detrimental to the health of your skin. Most people, however, do more harm than good by lathering on sunblock every time they go outside and prevent the health benefits of the sun from occurring. In addition, they expose themselves to a myriad of toxins that wreck havoc on their health. This summer, enjoy the sun. Reap the benefits that the sun provides and limit your toxic exposure by avoiding sunscreens with harmful ingredients!
