End Your Hormonal Problems with the Correct Tests

It is estimated that 80-95% of women have some kind of hormonal imbalance. Men, unfortunately are not much different with hormonal issues affecting 80% or so. In fact, in 2007 over 45 million prescriptions were written for hormone replacement therapy accounting for over 2 billion dollars in sales.

Despite the large amount of people being diagnosed and “treated” for these imbalances, the number of people affected continues to rise.

I believe this is true because in MOST instances the testing and “treatment” for these imbalances are completely wrong. In fact, the use of synthetic or bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is creating MORE problems because they never address the “True” cause of the problem. In addition, new research is constantly being released exposing the dangers of hormone prescriptions.

Anyone that has studied the hormone cascade understands that the hormonal system is VERY complex.

Steroid Hormone Synthesis


It is very clear to see that many of the hormones are intertwined and work interdependently of one another. When a level of one hormone is altered it poses a threat to affect the levels of many others, and in many cases it does.

Simply throwing more hormones in this cascade is certain to create a BIGGER problem because of the effects that it will have on the other hormonal levels. This includes both synthetic AND bio-identical hormones!

It’s All Connected

We now understand that the endocrine system (hormonal) is a reactionary system. What this means is that the symptoms that are commonly manifested in this system are merely results of problems from other systems.

In fact, the nervous, gastrointestinal, and endocrine system are all intertwined. Each system has receptors and transmitters for each other which allow them to communicate.

Most hormonal symptoms are ACTUALLY results of problems in the nervous or gastrointestinal systems!

Most hormones are regulated by your pituitary which is regulated by your hypothalamus. Hormonal imbalances occur as a result of problems at either the pituitary or hypothalamus level. What this means is that by treating the hormone levels themselves, you are treating “down stream” of the actual problem.

For example: Let’s say we decided to clean up a local stream and we were successful at collecting all the trash. But, in the time it took us to dispose of the trash and return to the stream to enjoy our work, it was filled with trash again. So, we clean it up again only to return a second time to see it filled with trash again! How many times would we do this BEFORE we look UPSTREAM to find the source of the problem? Probably not very many.

Unfortunately, this is EXACTLY what most health practitioners do when treating hormonal issues. They repeatedly treat “down stream” instead of finding the source of the problem. They simply test your hormone levels and throw additional ones at it were deficiencies are discovered.

Sure, some of your symptoms MAY “go away”, but the TRUE problem is never addressed. Just like cleaning the stream will produce a beautiful result temporarily, but give it enough time and it’s filled with trash again!

You must find the CAUSE of your hormonal imbalances. To do this you must have the CORRECT tests performed. Unfortunately, a simple hormone panel will NOT do this for you. You need to have lab tests performed that will evaluate not only your hormones, but your nervous and gastrointestinal systems as well. Why?  Because they all affect one another!

Wrong Tests = Wrong Diagnosis & Treatment

I can’t tell you how many times a patient will enter with hormonal symptoms and when asked if their hormone levels have been checked they reply, “Yes, and my doctor said that they all look normal.” Upon further questioning it is often discovered that their doctor simply ran a hormone blood panel and that their results were within “normal limits”.

The problem with a simple blood hormone panel is that it allows too much room for “false” negatives. Many times, after running one of our recommended labs on an individual who was within “normal limits,” we find that, in fact, their hormones are NOT normal and need to be addressed.

A common example of this is with Estrogen levels. Most lab tests ONLY test for Estradiol (E2) and completely omit Estrone (E1) and Estriol (E3). Without looking at ALL three levels how can you truly know if someone’s estrogen levels are normal or not?

Another MAJOR problem, besides completely omitting two very important Estrogen levels, is that many lab tests don’t evaluate the Estrogen Metabolites.

Estradiol, produced by the ovaries, must be broken down and excreted out the body. Both, Estradiol and Estrone are broken down in the liver and produce metabolites through a process called Hydroxylation. The parent Estrogen is transformed by the addition of an hydroxyl (OH) group.

Why is measuring these metabolites important? Because we know that certain levels of these metabolites are indicators of serious diseases such as CANCER!

A high level of 16a-hydroxyestrone (16a-OHE1), for example, generally represents a non-beneficial shift in estrogen metabolism. Elevations of this metabolite may be associated with increased risk of lupus, breast cancer, and other estrogen-dependent diseases.

Another example is low levels of 2-methoxyestrone (2-MeOE1) which indicate a higher risks for cancer because of its potent antioxidant and anticancer properties.

With all of this useful, LIFE SAVING information derived from measuring these metabolite levels, why don’t doctors order tests that measure them?

This is why so many women and men walk around with hormonal issues and precancerous risks without even knowing about it. They had the WRONG tests ran on them and told “everything is fine.” when in reality it is just a matter of time before they are diagnosed with a chronic or life threatening disease. Of coarse, they will simply be told that “we caught it too late” when in reality it could have possibly been avoided if only the right testing were performed.

This is why it is VERY IMPORTANT if you or your family has a history of estrogen dominant cancers, YOU must make sure you are getting these metabolites tested. Knowing these levels and working with a qualified health care practitioner is essential to protecting you from these diseases.

Are You being duped by this “natural” Sweetener?

Many of you understand that sugar has NO place in your life if you expect to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Sugar causes unhealthy spikes in your blood sugar causing your insulin and leptin levels to spike and research has shown that this is what leads to obesity and other chronic diseases.

In addition, countless research has be been done showing the harmful affects of artificial sweeteners such as NutraSweet, Aspartame, and Splenda. These neurotoxins wreak havoc on your brain cells and actually overstimulate them to death! You certainly want to avoid these if you desire to have a healthy lifestyle.

This brings me to “natural” sweeteners. There has been a growing interest in natural sweeteners over the past couple of years as many people are becoming aware and educated on the harmful affects of sugar and artificial sweeteners. With the sudden influx of interest of these sweeteners so have there been an influx of new products. Manufactures eagerly attempting to capitalize on your zeal for health, have created a myriad of products for you to choose from.

But are all of these products safe? Are you really doing yourself a favor by switching to any of these products? Unfortunately, in some cases you are not. In fact, in a few instances, the “natural” product is actually no better or even worse than sugar or the artificial sweeteners you are attempting to replace.

An example of this is Agave.

That’s right.  Agave is one of the biggest health scams on the market today!

Agave is an exotic plant that grows in Mexico and is more famously known as the main ingredient of tequila.  The word Agave means “noble” and this exotic image is what most retailers what you to imagine when you consume it.   However, this is hardly the “agave” that you are using when you purchase it in the store.

Most agave “nectar” or agave “syrup” is nothing more than a laboratory-generated super-condensed fructose syrup, devoid of virtually all nutrient value, and offering you metabolic misfortune in its place.

In fact, most agave syrup has a higher fructose content than any commercial sweetener – ranging 70 to 97 percent, depending on the brand, which is FAR HIGHER than high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), which averages 55 percent.

This means Agave is actually WORSE than High Fructose Corn Syrup!

You would have to be living under a rock not to know the harmful effects that High Fructose Corn Syrup provides. (Although the corn industry attempted to down play it with a handful of ridiculous commercials claiming that it is no more dangerous or different than natural sugar!)

Fructose is metabolized differently than glucose, it is metabolized 100% in your liver.  This process is the SAME way alcohol is broken down and produces the same side affects of chronic alcohol use, right down to the “beer belly.”

Although fructose does not increase your insulin levels, and is why it is often touted to diabetics, it causes insulin resistance instead.  Insulin resistance is far worse than high insulin spikes and is the ACTUAL cause of Diabetes.

You see, fructose is converted directly to fat. These fat cells release a hormone called Leptin which is the hormone that tells your body what to do with fat.

Too much Leptin release causes Leptin resistance.  This produces a communication problem in your body and results in your body’s inability to hear other hormones such as insulin.  When your body can’t hear insulin anymore, it is no longer capable of depositing the sugar in your blood to either your liver, muscle, or fat cells and results in too much glucose in the blood.  This will render a diagnosis of diabetes by your doctor.

What you must understand is that agave syrup is neither healthy nor natural.

As reported by Dr. Ingrid Kohlstadt, a fellow of the American College of Nutrition and an associate faculty member at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health:

“Agave is almost all fructose, a highly processed sugar with great marketing.”

Agave syrup has about 16 calories per teaspoon, the same as table sugar (sucrose), which is what is leading to the increasing waistline of most Americans.  Hardly a low calorie option.

Agaves grow primarily in Mexico, but you can also find them in the southern and western Untied States, as well as in South America.  A mature agave is 7 to 12 feet in diameter with leaves that are 5 to 8 feet tall and there are over 100 species of agave in a wide variety of sizes and colors.

Although the industry wants you to believe that agave nectar runs straight from the plant and into your jar, nothing could be farther from the truth.

Most of the agave “nectar” is made from its pineapple-like root bulb instead of the sap of the plant, despite the manufacture’s claims.  This root has a complex carbohydrate called inulin, which is made up of fructose molecules.

In MOST commercially available agave, this inulin laden root is converted into fructose-rich syrup using genetically modified enzymes and a chemically intensive process involving caustic acids, clarifiers, and filtration chemicals such as:

  • Activated charcoal
  • Cationic and ionic resins
  • Sulfuric and/or hydrofluoric acid
  • Dicalite
  • Clarimex
  • Inulin enzymes
  • Fructozyme

Not very natural sounding is it?

The result is highly refined fructose syrup, along with some remaining inulin.

Most agave “nectar” is neither safe nor natural with laboratory-generated fructose levels of more than 80 percent!

What about Organic Agave?

There are a handful of natural food companies that may produce a good “non-processed” agave product.  These are few and far in between so make sure you look at labels and into the processing the company uses.

Even if you find a good agave product, however, you do not want to consume too much of it. 25 grams per day is the max amount of fructose that you will want to consume in a single day.  Most people who use even just one tablespoon can very likely consume too much fructose since the average person consumes 70 grams per day.

The best alternative is to avoid Agave altogether!   If you must use a sweetener, I suggest you use Stevia.  Stevia is a natural herb that doesn’t affect your insulin levels and wont have the same harmful effects as fructose.

Be careful however, not to be conned into Stevia imitators such as Truvia.  This is NOT the same thing for they add “natural flavors” to it.  This is typically a code word for “we can put whatever we want into it and we won’t tell you so we can protect our patent.”  Stevia has been around forever and it’s safe, why mess with it?

Does YOUR Child Have A Brain?

Although as parents we often wonder about this very question about our children, we all know that in order for them to function as a viable living organism that ALL of our children do.

So why do I ask this question or am writing a blog about this topic?  Because, believe it or not, most parents don’t think about this very fact.  More about this in a minute, but first I need to explain a few things…

As a chiropractor, I deal with all sorts of people with different conditions and ailments. People come to see us for neck pain, back pain, joint pain, headaches, as well as, other more serious conditions. One on the biggest surprises people learn is that Chiropractic actually deals with the nervous system.

The nervous system is comprised of your brain, spinal chord and nerves and is the MOST important system in your body. In fact, during conception the first division of cells produce the beginning of the neural tube which eventually forms your brain.

We all know that the brain is the “main frame” computer of our body and its ability to communicate to the rest of it determines “how” healthy we are. When the brain can accurately transmit the correct information to the rest of the body, the body works as it is designed to, and when the brain can’t efficiently communicate to the rest of the body, the body develops problems and symptoms.

The brain communicates to the rest of the body via the spinal chord and nerves. Information generated in the brain travels down the spinal chord, to the appropriate level, and then out through the nerve that connects to the target organ, muscles, or cell.

Unfortunately, there are a myriad of reasons that the communication from to the brain to the rest of the body can be interrupted.  These reasons include physical, emotional, hormonal, and chemical stresses. When these are present, and interference results, the information traveling from the brain to the rest of the body is disrupted and results in improper communication and problems.

I want to address the physical stresses that can cause this interference.

It is no surprise to most people that posture has a role in their health.  In fact, many of the patients that we see in our office come in because of strains and stresses that they have experienced due to poor posture.

We have postures for sitting, sleeping, driving, watching TV, and working at the computer.   And although doing any of these once or twice doesn’t make a huge impact on our health, repeatedly doing them daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly does.

As a result of poor posture, as well as, physical trauma such as car accidents, falls or sports injuries, the normal curvature of your spine is often distorted and normal joint motion is often restricted.  These postural distortions and joint restrictions cause improper muscle movement and biomechanics which often lead to degenerative changes of your joints. This degenerative process produces inflammation and pain and is when MOST people come into our office for relief.

The MOST serious problem with postural distortions and joint restrictions, however, is that….

NERVE INTERFERENCE also occurs!

Because of these additional stresses, the information traveling from your brain to the rest of the body is negatively affected and often results in bigger problems.  For instance, instead of receiving 100% of the information from your brain to you heart, maybe you only get 80%.

Now, does that mean your heart won’t work or you will develop immediate symptoms? Who knows?  But I know that I prefer to have 100% of the information that my brain sends my heart to actually get there.

So what does this have to do with your children?

Your children have the SAME brain, spinal chord and nerves that you do!

Your child’s nervous system operates the EXACT same way as your does.  Their brain sends signals to the rest of their body through their spinal chord and nerves and that information is vital for their health.

In fact, I would argue that their body’s ability to communicate is MORE important than yours during their developmental years.

Despite this truth, so many parents are surprised when I mention chiropractic care for their children.  Most respond with, “Why does my child need care?  They don’t complain about any pain.”   And although in MOST cases our children patients aren’t experiencing pain, many of them DO have joint restrictions throughout their spines.

These restrictions often manifest in symptoms such as ear infections, colic, acid reflux, and bed wetting and in some instances “growing pains.” When the motion of these joints are properly restored, many of these symptoms disappear.

So how does your child develop some of these postural distortions and joint restrictions?

Have you ever seen a child sleep in a car seat?  What about in a stroller?  Does you kid fall or play rough with their siblings or friends.  What about sports?

One of the MOST traumatic things that children go through is child birth.  Imagine the torquing that occurs when your child manipulates themselves through the birthing canal. If the doctor had to use forceps or a vacuum to “assist” your child out then they went through even MORE trauma.

The fact is, we see children EVERYDAY in our practice.  Most of the time it is NOT because of pain or for any particular reason.  It is because many parents understand that their children DO HAVE brains and that it is vitally important that their child’s nervous system operates at 100%.

Can’t Lose Weight Despite Diet & Exercise? – It May Be Toxins!

We’ve all tried diets and exercise programs and, if you are like most people, your results are never what you truly expect. Sure, anyone can lose a little weight, but lasting results seem to never occur. In fact, many times people lose weight only to regain their previous weight plus some.   This is because, Diets Don’t Work, and has been something that I have shared in some of my previous blogs.

Diets typically don’t work because most ignore the underlying problem of weight gain.   Although there is some aspect of caloric control that must be monitored in order to lose weight, it is not the MOST important thing when it comes to weight loss.

As many of you know by now, weight loss is a hormonal issue. Leptin is the hormone in your body that regulates fat usage and IF your body can hear it, your body will utilize FAT for energy and if your body cannot hear Leptin, it will store Fat instead.

One of the MOST common reasons that Leptin is not heard by YOUR body is because your Leptin Receptors are interfered by TOXINS.

Yes, Toxins!

Believe it or not, you are bombarded with toxins EVERYDAY! From the pesticides on the foods to the cosmetics that we use, you constantly are being exposed to toxins.

Did you know that there are OVER 80,000 registered chemicals in the United States? In fact, OVER 1,500 NEW chemicals are introduced EVERY YEAR and ONLY about 5-10 are actually tested for safety!

Women, did you know that you apply an average of 515 chemicals to your body DAILY? Not only are most of these chemicals NEVER tested for safety, there has been absolutely NO testing on the synergistic affects of these chemicals.

You see, when you begin to mix and accumulate ALL of these toxins in your body on a daily/weekly/monthly/yearly basis, your body has to go through the improbable task of eliminating them from your body. And the reality is……,

In fact, researchers are continuing to discover traces of chemicals and other pesticides in children that were banned over 50 years ago! So not only are you exposed to toxins from your own environment, some of these toxins are being passed down from parent to child.

Because of this constant bombardment of chemicals, many people are suffering from Neurotoxicity. Neurotoxicity is the accumulation of toxins in your body that wreak havoc on your systems. Toxins can attach and inhibit the communication of your Leptin receptors, in your hypothalamus, to the Leptin produced by your fat cells. This results in FAT STORAGE instead of Fat Burning.

Not only does your hormone Leptin become imbalanced, but because your hypothalamus controls other major areas of your body like your Thyroid, hormones like estrogen, progesterone, cortisol, and testosterone can become imbalanced as well.

Not until you remove the toxins from your body will you ever experience true healing and hormone balance. This is why throwing additional synthetic AND bio-identical hormones at the problem rarely result in lasting changes. The system is broken, and simply adding additional hormones to the body will not fix it.

You must first identify WHAT toxins are present in your body, VSC test and urine analysis, and then work with a qualified health professional to remove them. Failure to appropriately identify these toxins could result in improper and ineffective detoxifying procedures. Grass-Fed Vs. Organinc, Is there a difference?

As many of you know, I am BIG proponent of Grass- fed beef.   In fact, I often teach on the subject and anyone that has signed up for my 7 Amazing Fat Burning Secrets knows that switching from conventional/commercial meat to Grass-fed is a must in order to stimulate Fat Loss.

Why should you switch your meat?

On MOST commercial farms, cows are often confined to feedlots and force fed an unnatural diet of grains and corn.  In addition to an unnatural diet, these animals are pumped full of antibiotics and growth hormones to get them as fat as possible as quickly as possible.

Commercial farming is all about profit and ANYTHING that promotes the all mighty dollar is encouraged.  Farmers learned a long time ago that by feeding the animals grain and corn, they would gain weight faster and the time from birth to slaughter would be shorter.

Did you know that in the 1920’s it took approximately 3-4 years for a cow to be large enough for slaughter?  In the 1950’s it only took 2-3 years.  Today, it takes 4-5 MONTHS!

The reason commercial meat is so bad for you, is bio-accumulation.   Bio-accumulation explains that all of the pesticides on the grains, the antibiotics pumped into the animals, and all the diseases commonly found in feedlots accumulate in the fat and muscle of the animal.

So, when you sit down and consume your steak dinner you are essentially eating all the pesticides, antibiotics, and diseases that the animal was exposed to.   Sounds delicious.

In addition to bio-accumulation, another MAJOR reason to avoid commercial beef is because the fat of the animal becomes denatured.   As a result of an unnatural grain/corn diet, the animals fatty acid ratio becomes completely disproportional.   A healthy ratio is between 2:1 -4:1 Omega 6 to Omega 3 and in most commercial beef it is closer to 21:1!

This ratio leads to chronic inflammation which is the underlying causes of MANY childhood and adult diseases.  In  children, these unnatural fat ratios are causing slower brain development and ADHD.   In adults, heart disease, cancer, hormonal issues, skin conditions, and type II diabetes are just a few.

What About Organic Beef?

Is there difference between Organic Beef and Grass- fed Beef?   This is a great question and one that I would like to clarify for you.

Organic simply means that the animals have been raised without antibiotics or hormones and have eaten an organic diet.   This diet must consist of organic grains, grasses, corn etc.  These animals, however, do NOT have to have access to fields and can be confined.

The problem with Organic Beef that is NOT Grass- Fed is the fact that the animal still eats an unnatural diet.   These animals were designed to EAT GRASS!    So although organic grain and corn is healthier than non-organic, unfortunately it still has the same effect on the fatty acid ratio in the animal.

Grass-fed beef are animals, however, that have been exclusively raised in pasture and eat Grass as their primary source of food.

Can YOU Slow Down YOUR Aging Process?

What if there was something you could do that would slow down the rate at which you were aging?

Sounds too good to be true?

Not according to the latest developments in the Anti-Aging market.

Many top researches believe that the bio-marker responsible for determining a person’s aging process is the Telomere of the chromosome.

The human body is made up of 100 trillion cells and every cell contains a nucleus. Inside the nucleus are the chromosomes that contain your genes. The chromosome is made up of two “arms,” and each arm contains a single molecule DNA, which is essentially a string of beads made up of units called bases.

A typical DNA molecule is about 100 million bases long. The last 15,000 of these bases is the Telomere. It is believed that you are conceived with 15,000 Telomeres, born with 10,000, and die when the number reaches approximately 5,000.
